Control Measures

West Valley Cities/Town, along with the Authority and SCVURPPP continue to address copper pollution in several ways, including:

  • Prohibiting discharge of wastewater to storm drains generated from the installation, cleaning, treating, and washing of copper architectural features, including copper roofs
  • Prohibiting discharges from pools, spas, and fountains into storm drains
  • Inspecting industrial and commercial sites for proper copper controls. There are no industrial sources of copper currently located in the West Valley communities.
  • Partnering with manufacturers to lower/eliminate copper content in products such as brake pads
  • Educating contractors, businesses, and the public on best management practices
  • Sediment control aimed at reducing PCBs and mercury also contribute to copper reductions. This includes municipal street sweeping, inlet maintenance, and construction/landscaping practices to reduce sediment and erosion.
